Harold Lasswell (1902-1978) was a prominent scholar in the area of propaganda research. He focused on conducting both quantitative and qualitative analyses of propaganda, understanding the content of propaganda, and discovering the effect of propaganda on the mass audience. Lasswell is credited with creating the mass communication procedure of content analysis. Lasswell maintained that a content analysis should take into account the frequency with which certain symbols appear in a message, the direction in which the symbols try to persuade the audience's opinion, and the intensity of the symbols used. By understanding the content of the message, Lasswell sought to achieve the goal of understanding the "stream of influence that runs from control to content and from content to audience." Lasswell's most well-known content analyses were an examination of the propaganda content during World War One and Two. In "Propaganda Technique in the World War,' Lasswell examined propaganda techniques through a content analysis, and came to some striking conclusions. Lasswell was similar to Ellul, in that he showed that the content of war propaganda had to be pervasive in all aspects of the citizen's life in order to be effective. Furthermore, Lasswell sought to demonstrate that as more people were reached by this propaganda, the war effort would become more effective. Aside from understanding the content of propaganda, Lasswell was also interested in how propaganda could shape public opinion. This dealt primarily with understanding the effects of the media. Lasswell was particularly interested in examining the effects of the media in creating public opinion within a democratic system.

Propaganda & Political Psychology

How do unpopular regimes stay in power, even in the face of widespread opposition? And what allows an individual or a group to take control of a society and institute the worst kinds of tyrannies, seemingly with the consent of the governed?

In this far-ranging and lively study, Karim Lalani explores the diverse and insidiously effective "tools" that governments and individual rulers have used throughout history to maintain their power base and keep the mass of people under control. From ancient Rome and China, to the Spain of Ferdinand and Isabella, to sixteenth-century England and imperial Russia, Lalani shows the ways in which patronage, propaganda and state-sponsored violence have been employed by tyrannical regimes, and demonstrates that extraordinary phenomena such as the Spanish Inquisition are but extreme examples of oppression as usual. While Lalani mostly confines his exploration to earlier historical periods in order to maintain a critical distance from events, the relevance of his analysis to contemporary society is obvious and the issues he raises speak directly to more recent examples of governmental abuses.

In its clear-sighted, colorful - and occasionally humorous - treatment of a very serious subject, The Oppressor's Toolkit offers an eye-opening and incisive look at a little-explored area of political history. More importantly, it provides a crucial perspective, giving us a lens through which to analyze and understand modern political systems and movements.

Propaganda & Political Psychology

The ongoing battle for hearts and minds in Iraq and Afghanistan is a military strategy inspired originally by efforts at domestic social control and counterinsurgency in the United States. Weaponizing Anthropology documents how anthropological knowledge and ethnographic methods are harnessed by military and intelligence agencies in post-9/11 America to placate hostile foreign populations. David H. Price outlines the ethical implications of appropriating this traditional academic discourse for use by embedded, militarized research teams.

Price's inquiry into past relationships between anthropologists and the CIA, FBI, and Pentagon provides the historical base for this expose of the current abuses of anthropology by military and intelligence agencies. Weaponizing Anthropology explores the ways that recent shifts in funding sources for university students threaten academic freedom, as new secretive CIA-linked fellowship programs rapidly infiltrate American university campuses. Price examines the specific uses of anthropological knowledge in military doctrine that have appeared in a new generation of counterinsurgency manuals and paramilitary social science units like the Human Terrain Teams.

David H. Price is the author of Threatening Anthropology: McCarthyism and the FBI's Surveillance of Activist Anthropologists and Anthropological Intelligence: The Deployment and Neglect of American Anthropology in the Second World War. He is a member of the Network of Concerned Anthropologists and teaches at St. Martin's College in Lacey, Washington.
